'Defending Faith: 5 Powerful Ways to Respond to Bible Scoffers'
Posted on 19 July 2026
Bible Scoffers
The term "scoffer" in the Bible refers to someone who mocks, ridicules, or scorns the belief of another. It can also mean someone who considers themselves an ambassador for opposing ideas. Scoffers not only disagree with certain beliefs but actively seek to demonstrate the foolishness of those ideas and recruit others to their side. In the Bible, scoffers are those who choose to disbelieve God and His Word, often declaring that there is no God.
The Nature of Scoffers
Scoffers voice their disagreement with God and His Word and make it their ambition to ridicule those who follow Him. They challenge the faith of believers and actively seek to undermine their beliefs. The book of Proverbs mentions scoffers several times, warning against their influence. Proverbs 3:34 says that God "scoffs at the scoffers, yet He gives grace to the afflicted." This verse reminds us that despite the scoffers' attempts to belittle believers, God is ultimately in control and extends grace to those who are afflicted by their mockery.
Psalm 1:1 provides clear instruction on how to deal with scoffers: "How blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stand in the path of sinners, nor sit in the seat of scoffers." This verse emphasizes the importance of not associating with those who actively ridicule our faith, as their influence can potentially weaken our own beliefs. Proverbs 13:20 also warns us that walking with wise individuals makes us wise, while being companions with fools can lead to harm.
Dealing with Scoffers
While we cannot completely avoid the presence of scoffers, we should be prepared to give an answer for our faith when challenged. As Christians, we should always be ready to explain why we have hope (1 Peter 3:15). However, there may come a time when it is necessary to distance ourselves from scoffers. Jesus instructed His disciples to "shake the dust off their feet" when encountering those who reject the message of the Gospel (Matthew 10:14). This does not mean we should give up on sharing our faith, but rather that we should recognize when it may be more beneficial to redirect our efforts elsewhere.
In 2 Peter 3:3, we are warned that in the last days, scoffers will come, following their own evil desires. We can see this prophecy being fulfilled today with the widespread acceptance of evolutionary theory that excludes the idea of a Creator, the rise of false religions denying the deity of Christ, and the increasing number of agnostics and atheists. As we near the time of Jesus' return, scoffing and disbelief will likely intensify (2 Timothy 3:1-5).
The Ultimate Triumph over Scoffers
While scoffers have always existed and will continue to be present in the world, there is hope for their ultimate transformation. Philippians 2:10–11 tells us that one day, "at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father." On that day, there will no longer be any scoffers. They will finally accept the truth, and their mocking and ridicule will cease.
Why This Matters
Understanding the presence and nature of scoffers is important for believers because it helps us navigate challenges to our faith. Knowing that there will always be individuals who oppose God's Word allows us to prepare ourselves mentally and spiritually. It reminds us that our faith may be tested, but ultimately God is in control. Additionally, recognizing when it may be necessary to distance ourselves from scoffers helps protect our own beliefs and prevent unnecessary harm to our faith.
