Bible and Self-Consciousness
Self-consciousness is an awareness of oneself, especially when being observed by others. While it is healthy to have a casual awareness of how others perceive us, self-consciousness as a way of life goes against the teachings of the Bible.
Our Focus Defines Us
Everyone has a focus in life. Our focus determines our decisions and shapes our worldview. For some, their focus revolves around themselves: How do I look? What do others think of me? Do I fit in? While it is important to pay attention to grooming, manners, and social norms, self-consciousness becomes sinful when it takes precedence over God's calling on our lives.
For example, let's say we feel prompted by the Holy Spirit to speak to a new coworker and invite them to church. If we prioritize self-consciousness, we may hesitate due to fears of what others might think or the possibility of embarrassment. But God-consciousness compels us to obey His prompting. When self-conscious thoughts override our obedience to God, we have given them too much focus.
In John 12:42-44, we see a group of Jewish leaders who believed in Jesus but refused to confess Him openly due to their self-consciousness. Their fear of what others thought and the potential consequences of public confession hindered them from becoming followers of Christ. The fear of man can become a snare (Proverbs 29:25).
A Shift in Focus
When the Holy Spirit transforms us through our faith in Christ, He shifts our focus. Instead of being self-focused, pleasure-focused, or culture-focused, God begins to make us Christ-focused. As we become more aware of Christ, our self-consciousness diminishes.
Our new calling as ambassadors for God's kingdom challenges us to die to ourselves and live for Christ alone (Galatians 2:20; Romans 6:3-8; Luke 9:23). Like John the Baptist, we should aspire for Christ to become greater in our lives while we become less (John 3:30).
Cultivating God's Pleasure
As part of our spiritual journey, we need to evaluate our focus. Whom are we striving to please? An awareness of the Holy Spirit's presence and pleasure is essential for living in the fear of the Lord. This fear refers to a reverential awe and respect for God.
To cultivate the fear of the Lord, we must intentionally acknowledge that God is watching and evaluating everything we think, say, or do. Pleasing God becomes our highest goal, redirecting our attention away from ourselves. When we realize that we have become too self-conscious, the remedy is humbling ourselves before God and offering Him our bodies as living sacrifices (Romans 12:1-2; Colossians 3:1-3).
Our focus shifts to glorifying God and reflecting His majesty through our surrender. Every aspect of our lives should aim to bring glory to Him (1 Corinthians 10:31). When we understand that we are masterpieces in the making in God's workshop (Ephesians 2:10), self-consciousness loses its grip on us.
Why This Matters
Understanding the issue of self-consciousness is crucial because it affects how we live out our faith. If we allow self-consciousness to dominate our thoughts and actions, we may miss out on opportunities to serve God and impact others for His kingdom.
When self-consciousness hinders us from obeying God and sharing His love with others, it becomes a stumbling block in our spiritual journey. By shifting our focus from ourselves to Christ, we can experience the freedom and fulfillment that come from living according to God's purposes.
Think About It
- Reflect on your own life. Are there areas where excessive self-consciousness hinders your obedience to God?
- How can you cultivate a greater awareness of God's presence and pleasure in your daily life?
- Consider the example of the Jewish leaders who were afraid to openly confess Jesus. Are there areas in your life where fear of others' opinions or consequences prevents you from boldly living out your faith?
By examining our focus, evaluating our priorities, and seeking to please God above all else, we can overcome self-consciousness and live in alignment with God's calling for our lives.
