Bible Self-Sacrifice
Self-sacrifice is a major theme in the New Testament, exemplified by Jesus Himself. Despite being God, Jesus chose to live a life of servant leadership, setting an example for us all (Philippians 2:6–8). In Matthew 20:27–28, Jesus tells His disciples that whoever wants to be first must be a servant, just as He came to serve and give His life as a ransom for many. However, it is important to understand that self-sacrifice does not mean subjecting ourselves to extreme bodily punishment or deprivation in order to please God. Such practices are not supported by Scripture and can be seen as man-made laws (Mark 7:7–9; Colossians 2:8).
Jesus explains the path to godly self-sacrifice in Luke 9:23, where He says that those who want to be His disciples must deny themselves, take up their cross daily, and follow Him. Taking up the cross implies a willingness to die to ourselves, our agendas, and our rights. When we crucify our fleshly desires and submit to Jesus' lordship, we begin making decisions based on His will (Galatians 2:20; 5:24).
The greatest commandments call for self-sacrifice. The first is to love God with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength, and the second is to love our neighbors as ourselves (Matthew 22:36–40). Yet, we cannot fulfill these commandments if we insist on having our own way. True self-sacrifice requires us to set aside our own desires for the sake of others. Galatians 5:13–14 urges believers not to use their freedom indulgently but rather to humbly serve one another in love, as loving our neighbor fulfills the entire law.
Self-sacrifice in a biblical sense means willingly limiting our freedoms, surrendering our rights, and pursuing the best interests of those whom God has called us to serve. It demands that we daily die to the passions of our flesh that are contrary to God's will for our lives (Romans 6:6–7; Galatians 2:20). It is important to note that we do not practice self-sacrifice to appease God or earn His favor. We already have His favor through Jesus (2 Corinthians 5:21; Ephesians 1:4–7). Instead, we choose self-sacrifice because it pleases our Heavenly Father and aligns us with the character of His Son (Romans 8:29).
Why This Matters
Understanding the concept of self-sacrifice is crucial for Christians as it shapes the way we live out our faith. By embracing self-sacrifice, we follow the example set by Jesus and align ourselves with God's will. It requires us to put others before ourselves and prioritize love and service over personal desires. Self-sacrifice allows us to demonstrate Christ-like character and impact the lives of those around us positively.
