Selfishness is an attitude that prioritizes one's own interests above the interests of others. In the Bible, we are commanded to avoid selfishness and instead consider others as more important than ourselves. The book of Philippians advises us to "do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility of mind regard one another as more important than yourselves; do not merely look out for your own personal interests, but also for the interests of others" (Philippians 2:3-4, NASB).

Selfishness can be compared to "empty conceit," which refers to having an overly high opinion of oneself. It is akin to narcissism. The Bible sees selfishness as a negative characteristic and describes it as one of the "works of the flesh" in Galatians 5:20. It leads to disorder and every evil practice (James 3:16). Selfishness can be seen in various biblical accounts, such as when the children of Israel demanded food they craved and put God to the test (Psalm 78:18). It also led the rich young ruler to turn his back on Jesus (Matthew 19:21-22). Selfishness can ruin friendships (Proverbs 18:1), hinder prayer (James 4:3), and is a product of earthly wisdom (James 3:13-14).

On the other hand, the opposite of selfishness, as described in Philippians 2, involves being united with Christ, having tenderness and compassion, and being like-minded with the same love and purpose (Philippians 2:2). To combat selfish ambition, genuine humility is required. Humility involves having a true perspective about ourselves in relation to God and not thinking too highly of ourselves (Romans 12:3). Prayer and a love for Scripture are also necessary. The psalmist prays, "Turn my heart toward your statutes and not toward selfish gain" (Psalm 119:36). Love covers a multitude of sins, including selfishness. When we are devoted to one another in brotherly love, selfishness cannot prevail (Romans 12:10). Having the attitude of Christ means showing tenderness and compassion to all those we encounter.

One effective way to overcome selfishness is by understanding where our true treasure lies. As Christians, we hold the things of this world loosely because we are laying up treasures in heaven (Matthew 6:19-21). We embrace the truth that it is more blessed to give than to receive (Acts 20:35), and we live in accordance with the principle that God loves a cheerful giver (2 Corinthians 9:7).
