Selflessness is a fundamental characteristic that every Christian should strive to possess. It holds such importance that Jesus Himself declared it to be the second most important commandment of all: "You shall love your neighbor as yourself" (Mark 12:31; Galatians 5:14). This commandment is not new, but rather a reaffirmation and expansion of an Old Testament law (Leviticus 19:18). James refers to it as the "royal" law, highlighting its supreme value to God (James 2:8).

Jesus spoke extensively about selflessness during His ministry on earth. In His Sermon on the Mount, Jesus goes beyond conventional expectations of selflessness, such as helping friends or family members. He teaches that we are called to love even our enemies and pray for those who persecute us (Matthew 5:44). Jesus emphasizes that loving friends and family is not enough, as even unbelievers can do that (Matthew 5:47). As followers of Christ, we are expected to love the unlovable, just as God blesses everyone (Matthew 5:45). This level of selflessness requires setting aside hurt feelings and wounded hearts.

Jesus serves as the ultimate example of selflessness. He humbled Himself by taking on the nature of a servant when He came into this world (Philippians 2:7). As followers of Christ, we are called to have the same mindset (Philippians 2:5). Jesus did not come for His own benefit but to serve and give His life as a ransom for many (Mark 10:45). Selflessness also involves putting God's will above our own, just as Jesus surrendered His will to God's plan (Luke 22:42). John the Baptist expressed this sentiment when he said, "He must become greater; I must become less" (John 3:30). It is about more of the Lord and less of ourselves.

The parable of the Good Samaritan, found in Luke 10:29–37, provides a vivid illustration of selflessness. In this story, a man from Samaria encounters a robbery victim who has been left for dead. The Samaritan shows compassion and immediately tends to the man's wounds, putting his own plans on hold (Luke 10:30, 34). Not only does the Samaritan give selflessly of his time and sympathy, but he also sacrifices his resources. He places the wounded man on his own animal, takes him to an inn, and provides care for him there (Luke 10:34–35). The following day, the Samaritan pays the innkeeper enough money for additional days at the inn and promises to cover any remaining expenses (Luke 10:35). This parable reveals the Samaritan's selflessness in various ways. He prioritizes the needs of others over his own and goes out of his way to show kindness to a stranger in need.

Selflessness goes against human nature, which is why it is often more challenging than selfishness. Our natural inclination is to prioritize ourselves, and society encourages selfish thinking. However, as Christians, we must daily take up our cross and follow Jesus (Galatians 2:20). Living a selfless life requires a constant reliance on the Lord Jesus Christ. Only through Him can our attitudes be transformed, leading to behaviors characterized by selflessness. When Christ dwells within us and we walk in step with Him, we should identify with the actions of the Good Samaritan rather than merely admiring them.

Why This Matters: Selflessness is a fundamental aspect of living out our faith as Christians. It is not just about prioritizing others before ourselves; it involves putting God first and surrendering our will to His. Jesus exemplified selflessness through His ministry on earth, ultimately giving His life for the salvation of humanity. By imitating His example, we become more like Him and fulfill the commandments to love God and love our neighbors.
