Stalking is a serious issue that involves the repeated following, watching, or harassing of another person with the intent to instill fear or gain unwarranted attention. While the Bible does not directly discuss stalking, we can apply its principles to understand the biblical perspective on this matter.

What is Stalking?

Stalking usually begins with an obsessive interest in another person, which may be positive or negative. For example, someone may become infatuated with a co-worker and shower them with unwanted gifts and phone calls even after being asked to stop. This behavior can be rightly interpreted as stalking because it creates fear and discomfort. On the other hand, someone may stalk another person as a means of revenge for perceived injustice. This can involve behaviors such as making repeated phone calls, driving slowly past their house, or following them.

Biblical Perspective on Stalking

The Bible teaches us to treat others the way we want to be treated (Matthew 7:12) and to love our neighbors as ourselves (Matthew 22:39). Stalking goes against these teachings as it instills fear and harm in others. Romans 13:10 says, "Love does no harm to a neighbor." Therefore, stalking cannot be considered an act of love or kindness.

Satan as a Stalker

Just like a stalker, Satan shows up at the worst times and badgers us with fears, doubts, and temptations.

Responding to Stalking

The Bible provides guidance on how to respond to satanic stalking by instructing us to resist the devil (1 Peter 5:9; James 4:7). We can resist by recognizing that we are under attack and standing firm on God's Word (Ephesians 6:10–17). We do not have the power to stop Satan's stalking, but we can take strong measures to ensure he does not defeat us. Jesus set an example for us in resisting Satan's temptations (Matthew 16:23).

Similarly, when dealing with human stalkers, it is important to take strong measures to make the stalking stop and refuse to allow the stalker to intimidate us. We should work with the appropriate authorities to eliminate the stalking (Romans 13:4), examine our own habits and practices to increase our safety (Ephesians 5:15), and resist the stalker's attempt to control us by refusing to give in to fear (Ephesians 6:10).
