Bible Stuttering

Stuttering is a speech disorder characterized by the involuntary repetition of sounds, syllables, or words. It can also include rapid eye blinks or tremors of the lips. While stuttering often begins in childhood and may cease in young adulthood for some individuals, for many, it persists throughout their lives and can become a significant impediment to their plans and dreams.

The Bible briefly mentions stuttering in Isaiah 32:4, where it refers to a "stammering tongue." Another possible mention of stuttering is found in Mark 7:32, although the context in that instance is not clear since the man was also deaf. Mark simply states that the man "could hardly talk." Some scholars have even suggested that Moses, one of the great figures in the Bible, was a stutterer based on his words in Exodus 4:10. Moses expressed his lack of eloquence and declared himself as "slow of speech and tongue."

It is important to note that God did not see Moses' perceived speech impediment as a hindrance to His plan. In fact, when Moses questioned his ability to fulfill God's calling due to his speech limitations, the Lord responded by reminding him of His sovereignty: "The LORD said to him, 'Who has made man’s mouth? Or who makes him mute or deaf, or seeing or blind? Is it not I, the LORD?'" (Exodus 4:11). It was Moses' lack of trust and refusal to allow God's power to work through him that displeased the Lord (Exodus 4:13–14).

Stuttering can be challenging for those who experience it, as it often leads to embarrassment and self-consciousness. This can deter individuals from pursuing goals that require fluent speech. While various methods such as psychological therapy, meditation, or tricks that fool the brain (like singing words they struggle with) have helped some people overcome stuttering, it is crucial to remember that God is not limited by our physical weaknesses. He specializes in using our weaknesses to showcase His power (1 Corinthians 1:27–28).

In the case of the apostle Paul, who played a significant role in spreading the message of Christianity, he may have also struggled with a speech impediment. This is suggested in passages such as 2 Corinthians 10:10 and 11:6. Additionally, Paul refers to a "thorn in the flesh" that he endured, which could potentially relate to a speech problem, possibly even stuttering (2 Corinthians 12:7–10). However, Paul found that the grace of Christ was sufficient for him, even in the midst of his weakness.

While it is wise to pursue various avenues of healing for a stuttering problem, it should never be used as an excuse to withdraw from God's service. If God could use Moses and Paul, despite their limitations, He can also use each one of us who fully surrenders to His will and plan.

Why This Matters

Stuttering can be a deeply personal and challenging issue for individuals who experience it. It can affect their confidence, self-esteem, and ability to communicate effectively. By understanding that God is not limited by our weaknesses and that He can use us for His purposes regardless of our perceived limitations, we can find encouragement and hope. This perspective helps individuals with stuttering realize that their value and worth come from God and not from their ability to speak fluently.

Think About It

  1. Have you ever known someone who stutters? How did their speech disorder impact their life?

  2. Reflect on times when you have felt limited by your own weaknesses or physical challenges. How does the example of Moses and Paul encourage you to trust in God's power and plan?

  3. Consider how you can support and encourage individuals who stutter. How can you help create an environment where they feel valued and accepted for who they are rather than judged by their speech?

  4. In what ways can you surrender your weaknesses and limitations to God, allowing Him to work through you for His purposes?
