'Biblical Guidelines for Temperance: Mastering Self-Control in Faith'

Bible Temperance
Temperance is a character trait that is emphasized in the Bible, particularly in the New Testament. It refers to moderation in thought, word, and action, as well as self-control and restraint in one's passions and behaviors. While we often associate temperance with limiting alcohol consumption, it extends beyond that context.
What is Temperance?
Temperance is the practice of restraining oneself from excess or indulgence. In the Bible, it is closely related to self-control and is considered one of the fruits of the Holy Spirit (Galatians 5:22). It is important for Christians to exercise temperance in all areas of life, not just when it comes to alcohol.
The Biblical Standard
The Bible sets a standard for Christians to allow nothing but the Holy Spirit to control their lives (Galatians 5:25). This means that any fleshly desire that is not restrained can become like a functional god in our lives. Whether it be alcohol, food, lust, or greed, practicing temperance is essential for living a godly life and pleasing the Lord.
The Danger of Lack of Temperance
Lack of temperance can have serious consequences. In 1 Corinthians 9:27, the apostle Paul describes how he disciplined his body and kept it under control, so as not to be disqualified after preaching to others. Even Paul recognized the power of the flesh to negatively impact his ministry. Today, we often witness Christian leaders falling from grace due to a lack of self-control and personal discipline.
Avoiding Sin
Living temperate lives does not mean we can dabble in sin as long as it is only a little bit. Romans 13:14 warns us to make no provision for the flesh and its lusts. This implies that along with temperance, we should exercise caution and wisdom. When our desire is to please the Lord, we should stay far away from anything that even appears to be evil.
The Opposite of Temperance
The opposite of temperance is self-indulgence. When we allow ourselves to become lazy or indulge in certain areas, that laziness tends to spread to other areas as well. However, when we exercise self-control physically, mentally, and spiritually, we are better prepared for greater effectiveness in our mission to represent Christ well (Matthew 28:19–20; 1 Corinthians 10:31).
Why This Matters
Understanding and practicing temperance is crucial for Christians because it helps us align our lives with God's standards and live in a way that honors Him. By exercising self-control and restraining our fleshly desires, we can avoid falling into sin and ensure that the Holy Spirit directs our choices rather than being controlled by worldly passions.
Think About It
- Are there areas in your life where you struggle to exercise temperance? What steps can you take to cultivate self-control in those areas?
- How does practicing temperance contribute to your witness as a Christian? In what ways can it impact your effectiveness in sharing the Gospel?
- Reflect on any Christian leaders or public figures who have fallen due to a lack of self-control. How can their examples serve as a reminder of the importance of temperance in our own lives?
In summary, temperance is an essential character trait for Christians, emphasizing self-control and moderation in all aspects of life. It is not limited to alcohol consumption but extends to every area where our fleshly desires can lead us astray. By practicing temperance, we align ourselves with God's standards and strengthen our ability to live as effective witnesses for Christ.
