In the Bible, witchcraft is considered a counterfeit to true spirituality and is associated with practices such as fortune-telling, necromancy (consulting the dead), and divination. These practices are detestable to the Lord and are not endorsed by God.
The Bible's Stance on Witchcraft
The Bible explicitly instructs believers to not imitate the detestable practices of the nations around them. In Deuteronomy 18:9–12, God warns His people against engaging in practices like sacrificing children, divination, sorcery, witchcraft, casting spells, consulting mediums or spiritists, and interpreting omens. Those who participate in these activities are considered detestable to the Lord.
Throughout both the Old and New Testaments, the seriousness of witchcraft is emphasized. Under the Mosaic Law, practicing witchcraft was punishable by death (Exodus 22:18; Leviticus 20:27). King Saul's disobedience to God's commands led to his death because he consulted a medium for guidance (1 Chronicles 10:13). The New Testament also warns against sorcery, which is translated from the Greek word pharmakeia and includes the use of mind-altering drugs (Galatians 5:20; Revelation 18:23).
The Source of Spiritual Power
The Bible teaches that there are only two sources of spiritual power: God and Satan. Satan has limited power allowed by God (Job 1:12; 2 Corinthians 4:4; Revelation 20:2). Seeking spirituality, knowledge, or power outside of God is considered idolatry and closely related to witchcraft. The desire to know the future and control events apart from God is rooted in Satan's temptation to Eve in Genesis 3:5, where he enticed her with the idea of becoming like God.
Witchcraft is Satan's realm, and he excels in counterfeiting what God does. In Exodus 8:7, when Moses performed miracles before Pharaoh, the Egyptian magicians replicated them through demonic power. Witchcraft involves attempting to achieve an altered state of consciousness or gain supernatural abilities through rituals, potions, or other means. However, these practices are not from God and can open individuals up to the influence of demonic spirits.
Modern Forms of Witchcraft
In modern times, there are various seemingly harmless practices that can be considered forms of witchcraft. These include engaging with horoscopes, using Ouija boards, participating in Eastern meditation rituals, and even certain video and role-playing games. Any activity that involves seeking power from a source other than the Lord Jesus Christ is considered witchcraft.
Scripture warns against involvement in such practices. Revelation 22:15 includes witches in a list of those who will not inherit eternal life. It is important to note that believers should not fear Satan's power but should respect it and stay away from it. Greater is the power of Christ within us than the power of Satan in the world (1 John 4:4). While Satan can cause harm and destruction, believers ultimately have victory through Jesus (Isaiah 54:17; 1 John 5:4).
Repentance and Avoidance
When individuals give their lives to Christ, repentance is necessary. This repentance should involve renouncing any involvement with witchcraft. The early believers in Acts 19:19 set an example by publicly burning their magic books and renouncing their previous practices.
Isaiah 8:19 encourages people to inquire of God rather than consulting mediums or spiritists. Seeking any power apart from God is futile and leads to emptiness and death. Witchcraft promises spirituality but fails to deliver. Jesus alone has the words of life (John 6:68).

Understanding the Bible's stance on witchcraft is essential for believers. It emphasizes the importance of seeking spirituality, knowledge, and power from God alone. Engaging in any form of witchcraft is to enter into Satan's realm and is contrary to God's will.
