Body Image
Body image is a topic that holds significant importance in the Bible. In Genesis 1, we witness God's unique design of the first man and woman. While God spoke the universe into existence, He took a different approach with humanity. God formed Adam's body from the dust of the earth and breathed life into him, making him a living soul (Genesis 2:7). Later, God created Eve from one of Adam's ribs (Genesis 2:21–22). It is clear from Scripture that our physical bodies were intentionally created by God to house our spirits and reflect His image (Romans 12:1).
However, problems arise concerning body image when we reject or take credit for God's design. While it is admirable to strive for health and functionality in our bodies, excessive focus on appearance can limit diversity. Different cultures have their own standards of beauty, and what is considered attractive varies throughout history. We must avoid despising our bodies as it would mean rejecting the gift God has given us. On the other hand, overemphasizing our physical appearance can lead to pride, which ultimately leads to destruction (Proverbs 16:18; James 4:6).
Psalm 139:13–14 sets a healthy standard for body image by acknowledging that God fearfully and wonderfully made us. If we accept this truth, there is no room for disagreement with our Creator's design. Isaiah 45:9 reminds us that clay does not question the potter's work. Even those with bodies that do not function normally can still appreciate the body they have and bring glory to God through it. Each person was created for God's pleasure and glory (Colossians 1:16), and a healthy body image recognizes our physical being as a gift from a loving God.
When we become followers of Jesus, our bodies become temples of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 3:16, 6:19–20). As Christians, we are called to treat our bodies with reverence and respect since they belong to Him (Romans 6:12–13). The Bible provides specific guidance on how we can honor God with our bodies, including avoiding gluttony (Proverbs 23:20), abstaining from excessive alcohol consumption (Isaiah 5:22; Proverbs 20:1), maintaining sexual purity (1 Corinthians 6:18; Ephesians 5:3), and controlling our words (Proverbs 12:22; Colossians 4:6).
Our body image should be based on a single factor: whether our presentation of our bodies reflects a life dedicated to bringing glory to God. When our goal is to glorify God, we can find confidence and satisfaction in our physical appearance, regardless of societal standards. Our ultimate aim is to please the only One whose opinion truly matters (Psalm 37:18).
Why This Matters
Understanding and embracing a healthy body image is crucial for Christians. By recognizing that our bodies are fearfully and wonderfully made by God, we can reject the world's superficial standards of beauty and find contentment in how we look. This perspective allows us to focus on honoring God with our bodies and treating them as temples of the Holy Spirit. By prioritizing God's glory over societal expectations, we can develop a healthy self-image that aligns with biblical values.
Think About It
How does society's definition of beauty differ from God's perspective? How can you align your own view of beauty with God's design?
In what ways can you honor God with your body? Are there any areas where you need to make adjustments in your lifestyle or habits?
Reflect on Psalm 139:13–14. How does embracing the truth that you are fearfully and wonderfully made impact your body image?
