'Embracing the Spirit: Unveiling the Power of Being Born Again'

Born of the Spirit

The concept of being "born of the Spirit" is a central theme in the Bible, particularly in the New Testament. It is described using various metaphors such as being "born again," "born of God," and "born of the Spirit." These metaphors draw parallels with physical birth to help us understand what it means to have a saving relationship with Jesus.

When a baby is born, a new person enters the world. This new life will grow and eventually resemble its parents. Similarly, when we are born of the Spirit, a new spiritual life begins within us. As we grow in our faith, we gradually become more like our heavenly Father (Romans 8:29).

The Inadequacy of Human Efforts

Many people attempt to know God through different means such as religion, ethics, intellect, nature, or emotional experiences. However, none of these methods bring us closer to truly communing with the God of the Bible. God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must do so "in spirit and in truth" (John 4:24). Trying to know God through moral codes, intellectual pursuits, or emotional feelings is like trying to paint a portrait with a hammer and nails or bake a meal using pen and paper – it simply won't work.

To truly commune with a holy and incorporeal Being like God, we need to have our spirits reborn with life from His Spirit. Without this spiritual transformation, we lack the capability to fellowship with Him. We must be born of the Spirit.

The Way to Enter God's Presence

Thankfully, God has provided a way for fallen human beings to enter His holy presence. Jesus said, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me" (John 14:6). Through His sacrificial death and resurrection, Jesus opened a door that had been locked. When He died on the cross, the veil of the temple was torn in two, symbolizing that He has made a way for us to enter God's presence. God has opened the door to heaven so that whoever trusts in the sacrifice of His Son can be born again in their spirit (Mark 15:38).

When we place our faith in the risen Christ, a divine transaction takes place. God removes from us the sin, guilt, and condemnation we deserve because of our rebellion against Him. He separates our sin from us as far as the east is from the west (Psalm 103:12). At the moment of repentance and faith, the Holy Spirit breathes new life into us, making our bodies His temple (1 Corinthians 3:16). Our spirits can now commune with God's Spirit, and He assures us that we belong to Him (Romans 8:16).

The Transformation of Our Spirits

We can think of our human spirits as deflated balloons within our hearts. We may not be fully aware of their existence until God calls our names and begins to awaken them. When we respond to God's call with repentance and faith in what Jesus Christ has done for our salvation, we are born of the Spirit. At that moment, the balloon inflates as the Holy Spirit fills us and begins His transformative work within us. As we continue to grow in our relationship with God, we gradually start to resemble Jesus through this ongoing transformation (2 Corinthians 5:17; Romans 8:29).

Why This Matters

Understanding what it means to be born of the Spirit is crucial for Christians because it impacts how we live out our faith. It reminds us that our spiritual rebirth is not something we achieve through our own efforts or religious practices. Instead, it is a gift from God that comes through faith in Jesus Christ.

Being born of the Spirit also emphasizes the importance of our relationship with God. It is not simply about following a set of rules or adhering to religious rituals. It is about having a personal connection with the living God, who dwells within us through His Spirit.
