The Branch Davidians are a religious group known for their focus on end-times prophecy and the need to prepare for the Lord's return. They originated from a splinter group of Seventh-day Adventists led by Victor Houteff in the 1930s. Houteff's reforms were rejected by the Seventh-day Adventist Church, prompting him to settle near Waco, Texas, and establish a self-sustaining community known as the Shepherd's Rod Seventh-day Adventists.

After Houteff's death, his wife Florence continued his work but later withdrew from the group after her date for the dawn of the Messianic age passed without any events. One of the splinter groups, led by Ben Roden, established the General Association of Davidian Seventh-day Adventists at a compound called Mt. Carmel outside Waco. It was Roden's group that adopted the name "Branch Davidians," referencing King David as a foreshadowing of their ministry and Isaiah 11:1, which speaks of a fruitful branch.

In 1978, Vernon Howell emerged as a charismatic leader within the Branch Davidians and changed his name to David Koresh. He claimed messianic status and identified himself as the Lamb of Revelation 5. Koresh also asserted that he was the one to open and reveal the meaning of the seven seals. He took multiple "spiritual wives," including teenagers and pre-teens, which led to accusations of child abuse against him.

In 1993, a tragic event unfolded when federal agents attempted to serve arrest and search warrants at the Branch Davidian compound. The agents encountered armed resistance, resulting in a firefight that claimed the lives of four ATF agents and several Branch Davidians. The compound was sealed off, and negotiations took place for about two months. Some children were released during this time.

Concerned about ongoing child abuse, the FBI decided to raid the compound on April 19. Tear gas was used to try and force the remaining cult members to leave, but fires broke out during the operation. The cause of the fires is disputed, with some claiming they were caused by exploding tear gas canisters and others alleging deliberate action by the Davidians. In the end, the entire compound burned down, resulting in the death of 76 people, including 20 children and David Koresh.

The Waco siege sparked a political firestorm, leading to hearings in both the House and Senate. After extensive investigations, the hearings concluded that the government did not act wrongly. However, questions remain about whether alternative approaches could have been taken to prevent such bloodshed. Some survivors of the raid have attempted to reorganize the Davidian movement in Waco but have struggled to gain many followers.
