Faith is an essential aspect of the Christian life. It is emphasized throughout the Bible and is considered crucial for pleasing God (Hebrews 11:6). In Ephesians 2:8-9, we learn that faith is a gift from God and not something we generate on our own. Every Christian has received this gift of faith from God, and it serves as part of the armor of God, which shields us from the attacks of the evil one (Ephesians 6:16).

While the Bible does not explicitly mention having "childlike" faith, Jesus does talk about becoming like little children in order to enter the kingdom of God (Matthew 18:2). This statement was made in response to the disciples' question about who would be considered the greatest in heaven (Matthew 18:1). Jesus called a child to Him and said, "Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven" (Matthew 18:3).

In this context, Jesus challenges the disciples, and us, to rethink their understanding of greatness in God's kingdom. He encourages them to adopt a childlike modesty in addition to their faith. The greatest in heaven are those who willingly take the lowest position. A young child embodies qualities such as humility, lack of ambition, and teachability. Children are typically humble and not prone to pride or hypocrisy. Humility is a virtue that is rewarded by God (James 4:10).

Although faith is not explicitly mentioned in Matthew 18:1-5, we know that it is not just humility that grants us access to heaven; it is faith in Jesus Christ. A humble and unpretentious faith could rightly be called a "childlike faith." When Jesus wanted to bless the children, He said, "Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. Truly I tell you, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it" (Mark 10:14-15).

So, what does it mean to receive the kingdom of God like a child? It means approaching God with openness, honesty, and unbridled joy, just as a child receives a gift. Children have a natural trust in their earthly fathers, and in the same way, we should trust that our heavenly Father will give good gifts to those who ask Him (Matthew 7:11).

It is important to note that having a childlike faith does not mean being easily fooled or led astray. Children may be artless and prone to believing myths and fantasies, but that is not the kind of faith Jesus encourages. He promotes a humble and honest faith in God, using the innocence of a child as an example. Emulating the faith of children means taking God at His Word and trusting in Him without reservation.
