Christian Character

Character is a fundamental aspect of our moral fiber and can be defined as the excellence of moral beings. Just as gold is valued for its purity and art for its beauty, humans are esteemed for their character. People with strong character are known for their honesty, ethics, and charity. They are often referred to as individuals of principle and integrity. On the other hand, those lacking character tend to display dishonesty, unethical behavior, and a lack of compassion.

A person's character is the sum of their disposition, thoughts, intentions, desires, and actions. It is important to assess character based on overall tendencies rather than isolated incidents. For example, King David is considered a man of good character (1 Samuel 13:14) despite his occasional sins (2 Samuel 11). Conversely, King Ahab may have performed noble acts on occasion (1 Kings 22:35), but his overall character was flawed (1 Kings 16:33). The Bible also highlights individuals with noble character, such as Ruth (Ruth 3:11), Hanani (Nehemiah 7:2), David (Psalm 78:72), and Job (Job 2:3). These individuals consistently demonstrated moral virtue in their lives.

Character is influenced and developed through the choices we make. Daniel made a firm decision not to defile himself in Babylon (Daniel 1:8), and this choice played a significant role in shaping his unwavering integrity. In turn, character influences our choices. Proverbs 11:3a states that "The integrity of the upright guides them." Having strong character helps us withstand the storms of life and prevents us from succumbing to sin (Proverbs 10:9a).

It is God's purpose to develop character within us. Proverbs 17:3 compares the testing of a person's heart to the refining of silver and gold. Godly character is the outcome of the Holy Spirit's work of sanctification. Character in a believer is a consistent reflection of Jesus in their life. It is the transformation of purity in heart into purity in action. Sometimes, God uses trials to strengthen our character, as stated in Romans 5:3-4: "we also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope." The Lord takes pleasure in the growth of character in His children, as mentioned in 1 Chronicles 29:17 and Psalm 15:1-2.

We can actively develop character by controlling our thoughts (Philippians 4:8), practicing Christian virtues (2 Peter 1:5-6), guarding our hearts (Proverbs 4:23; Matthew 15:18-20), and surrounding ourselves with good company (1 Corinthians 15:33). Men and women of character serve as positive examples for others to follow, and their godly reputation will be evident to all (Titus 2:7-8).

Why This Matters

Christian character is crucial because it reflects our relationship with God and impacts our interactions with others. Our character serves as a testimony to the transforming power of Christ in our lives. When we display honesty, integrity, and love, we demonstrate the difference that faith makes. By cultivating character, we become effective witnesses for Christ in both word and deed.

Furthermore, having strong character provides stability and resilience in the face of challenges. It enables us to withstand temptations and remain faithful to God's commands. Character acts as a moral compass, guiding us towards righteousness even when circumstances are difficult. It helps us make wise decisions and maintain our commitment to following Christ.

Think About It

  1. Reflect on your own character. Are there areas where you can grow in integrity, honesty, or compassion? How can you actively develop those virtues in your daily life?

  2. Consider the impact of your character on others. How does your behavior and conduct influence those around you? Are you setting a positive example for others to follow?

  3. Reflect on the role of trials and challenges in shaping character. How have difficult experiences helped strengthen your faith and character? How can you rely on God's guidance during times of testing?

  4. Think about the connection between character and reputation. How does your character shape the way others perceive you? How can you ensure that your reputation aligns with godly values?
