God is Love
The Bible tells us that God is love (1 John 4:8), and it describes love in a beautiful way. Love is patient, kind, does not envy or boast, is not proud, rude, or self-seeking. It is not easily angered and keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, trusts, hopes, and perseveres. Love never fails (1 Corinthians 13:4-8a).
God embodies this description of love because He is love. His nature is characterized by love and everything He does is motivated by love. Let's explore a few ways in which God is the essence of love.
Love Is Patient and Kind
In love, God exhibits patience and kindness towards us. He doesn't force Himself on anyone but allows us to respond to His love freely. God patiently waits for us to come to Him, offering forgiveness and salvation through Jesus Christ. His kindness is evident in the blessings He bestows upon us, even when we don't deserve them.
Love Does Not Envy or Boast
God's love is not marked by envy or boasting. He doesn't covet what others have or boast about His power or authority. Instead, He humbly serves and blesses His creation without partiality. God's love is selfless and seeks the well-being of others.
Love Is Not Proud or Rude
God's love is humble and respectful. He doesn't exalt Himself above others but rather stoops down to lift us up. In Jesus Christ, God demonstrated humility by taking on human form and living among us. He treated everyone with respect and dignity, showing us how to love one another.
Love Is Not Easily Angered and Keeps No Record of Wrongs
God's love is patient and forgiving. He doesn't hold grudges or keep a record of our wrongdoings. When we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. God's love extends grace and mercy to us, offering forgiveness and reconciliation.
Love Rejoices with the Truth and Protects
God's love is characterized by truth and protection. He rejoices when we walk in the truth and follow His ways. His truth sets us free from sin and leads us into abundant life. God's love also protects us from harm, guiding us and watching over us as a loving shepherd cares for his sheep.
The Greatest Expression of God's Love
The greatest expression of God's love is seen in John 3:16: "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life." God's love for humanity was so great that He sent Jesus, His Son, to die for our sins so that we could have eternal life with Him.
Through Jesus' sacrifice on the cross, God demonstrated His love for us even while we were still sinners (Romans 5:8). This act of love made a way for us to be reconciled to God and have our sins forgiven. It is through faith in Jesus that we can experience the fullness of God's love and receive the gift of eternal life.
