Praise God: A Call to Worship and Give Thanks
Praising God is an essential aspect of the Christian faith. It is a command found throughout the Bible, encouraging all living creatures to lift their voices in worship and thanksgiving to the Lord (Psalm 150:6). In the Old Testament, there are three Hebrew words commonly translated as "praise," each with its own nuances.
The first word is "yadah," which means "praise, give thanks, or confess." It encompasses the idea of acknowledging and expressing gratitude to God for His goodness and faithfulness. The second word is "zamar," which means "to sing praises." This word emphasizes the use of music and song in praising God. The third word is "halal," the root of "hallelujah," which means "to praise, honor, or commend." Halal carries a sense of exuberant praise and adoration for the Lord.
The book of Psalms is a treasure trove of songs filled with praises to God. For example, Psalm 9 declares, "I will be glad and rejoice in you; I will sing the praises of your name, O Most High" (verse 2). Psalm 150 is particularly focused on praising God. It uses the term "praise" thirteen times in just six verses. In the New Testament, we see examples of people praising Jesus. In Matthew 21:16, those witnessing Jesus riding on a donkey into Jerusalem praised Him. A leper in Matthew 8:2 bowed before Jesus, and in Matthew 28:17, the disciples worshiped Him after His resurrection. Jesus accepted this praise because He is God.
The early church also engaged in times of praise and worship. Acts 2:42-43 describes how the first church in Jerusalem devoted themselves to worship. At Antioch, the church leaders prayed, worshiped, and fasted when Paul and Barnabas were called into missionary work (Acts 13:1-5). Many of Paul's letters contain extended sections of praise to the Lord, such as 1 Timothy 3:14-16 and Philippians 1:3-11.
Looking ahead to eternity, we find that all of God's people will join in eternal praise. Revelation 22:3 tells us that in the absence of sin, God's servants will worship Him forever. Our worship on earth serves as preparation for the ultimate celebration of praise that will take place in eternity with the Lord.
