Why Do the Wicked Prosper?
The question of why the wicked prosper is one that has troubled believers throughout history. Even the prophet Jeremiah asked God why the way of the wicked prospers, and Job wondered why the wicked live on and increase in power. The psalmist expressed envy when he saw the prosperity of the wicked, questioning if living righteously was worth the trouble. So, why does it seem like evil people often thrive while the righteous suffer?
One possible reason for this perception is our own temptation to envy the wicked. As God's children, we may be upset when we see an evil person doing well because we feel they have something we do not. However, it's important to remember that the prosperity of the wicked is temporary. In Psalm 37, we are reminded not to fret or be envious of those who do wrong because their prosperity will soon wither away. Trusting in the Lord and doing good will lead to a righteous reward that far surpasses any temporary success enjoyed by the wicked.
It is also natural to wonder why God shows grace and mercy to people who do not deserve it. We may desire appropriate consequences for bad behavior and struggle to forgive our enemies. However, we should remember that many of us were once hard-hearted and stubborn ourselves, deserving of God's judgment. But God extended His love and grace towards us so that we might receive salvation. It is through His rich mercy and love that we have been saved.
Another answer to the question "Why do the wicked prosper?" lies in understanding that even the wicked have a purpose to fulfill in God's plan. Throughout history, God has raised up various nations and leaders, including ruthless and impetuous ones, to accomplish His purposes. He used Babylon to judge disobedient Judah, raised up Cyrus for His pleasure, and employed Egyptians and Assyrians in His righteous judgment. The wicked may prosper for a time, but ultimately, God's sovereign plan will prevail.
Perhaps the most important reason why the wicked prosper is because of God's love for sinners. John 3:16 tells us that God loves the world so much that He gave His only Son to save us. He is patient, compassionate, and merciful towards the wicked because He desires their salvation. God's patience with the wicked provides an opportunity for them to repent and turn towards Him. Second Peter 3:9 reassures us that the Lord is not slow in keeping His promise but is patient because He wants everyone to come to repentance.
Although we may desire immediate judgment for the wicked, we must trust in God's sovereign plan and His desire for all people to be saved. His patience with the wicked is an opportunity for us to pray for them and share the message of salvation. We are called to tell the wicked about God's wonderful salvation and warn them of the consequences if they remain hardened in their ways.

It helps us maintain our trust in God's justice and sovereignty, knowing that their prosperity is temporary and that God has a purpose even for the wicked.
